Both blue and black ink are the most stable of all the tattoo colors out there. The pigment being darker seems to help it maintain its color and brilliance longer than any other color. The two colors to stay away from are red and yellow. These two colors seem to fade the fastest and not look as good as it ages. Also a lot of people have reported having mild to serve allergic reactions to red tattoo ink. These people have had other tattoos and not had any problems with them. There just seems to be something about the red ink that doesn't sit well with people. So to be on the safe side stay away from red.

If you love being in the sun you may want to stick with a black or blue tattoo, but keep in mind you still have to apply a sunblock of 45 or higher to it to help it from fading.
